Tip Of The Month
September - Clearing Your Clutter
The first rule of Feng Shui is to clear your clutter and what I always say to somebody is, “do you like it and do you use it“ ? and if the answer is “no” - get rid of it.

Clearing your clutter is such an important facet of Feng Shui and before you can let anything into your life, you have to let go of something. So before applying Feng Shui cures you need to start by tidying up, cleaning and letting some things go. When energy can’t flow easily it stagnates. Clutter creates stagnation and makes everything grind to a halt; it can make you depressed, tired and feel that you are stuck in a rut.

If an area of your home is blocked and stagnant this will be having a negative influence on the corresponding area of your life. So as we fill our homes with books, ornaments, best crockery for that special guest that never comes, perhaps two toasters (one for emergencies), we slow down the flow of Chi.

Whenever you start a new project, you should give your home a spring clean as this allows you to think more clearly. Likewise if you are feeling depressed, clear out a cupboard. Clearing clutter releases huge amounts of positive energy and lifts your spirits. Whatever you are doing on the outside, you are also doing on the inside. So by clearing your clutter you can let go of all sorts of negative emotions.

When we have too many things we spend all our time trying to keep our belongings in some kind of order. Instead of going out meeting people and having fun we spend all our time tidying, which often involves making piles of things and moving them from one place to another. We don’t invite people over because we are subconsciously embarrassed about the amount of things that are left lying around as there is no where to put them.

People work hard so they can afford to have the latest mod-cons, but there are some people who do not move house because they cannot bear the thought of packing. The more possessions you have, the more insecure you become. Try to keep a happy balance. Remember that shopping can be fun, but you may end up needing a therapist for the depression or the obsession.

How can you tell if you have too much clutter ?

If, throughout the day, you are constantly thinking about that item that you left on the floor because you could not find room in the cupboard, or that birthday card that you bought for someone’s special day then come the time you could not find it, then you have too much clutter. If, whenever you think of your home, you have a mental image of overstuffed areas, then you definitely have too much clutter.

Are you one of those people who cannot let go of anything because it might be useful one day ? Instead of becoming more secure, the opposite starts to happen and you become more insecure. You live in the past instead of the present.
