March - Minerals and crystals
Minerals and crystals are different things to different people. For some of us, crystals and
stones are inanimate objects, the lowest form of life on the planet, while for others; they are
great sources of light and energy. In whatever way they serve, these beautiful gifts from the
earth bring pleasure to the eye of the beholder as they display exquisite colours, perfected
geometric forms and radiance into the lives of all of us.

Some crystals have their origin in the magma or the fiery gases of the earth’s interior or in
the volcanic lava streams which reach the earth’s surface. These minerals include quartz and
are called igneous. Some crystals grow from vapours in vents in volcanic regions, while others
form from water solutions or grow with the help of organisms on or near the earth’s surface,
known as sedimentary minerals. Lastly new minerals are formed by the re-crystalisation of
existing minerals under great pressure and high temperatures in the lower regions of the
earths crust and are known as metamorphic minerals such as obsidian and citrine. No one
really knows how long it takes for most crystals to form, and some speculate that it takes
thousands of years while others say that when the elements are right, crystals could form in
an instant. Whatever Mother Nature’s secret, she conceives incubates and gives birth to a wide
variety of exquisitely beautiful crystalline forms.

Down through the ages, civilisation have used the power of crystals and stones for many
purposes. Kings in ancient India were advised to collect the very best gems to protect them
from harm. Medical practices of many ancient cultures included wearing talismans and amulets,
and depending on the ailment specific stones were worn or carried to bring about the desired
effect.

Old Rome believed that external objects, such as stones, had a direct and positive influence on
the body. Early references in Greek and roman writings indicate that stones were worn as
talismans for health, protection and to attract virtues.

Throughout history gems and stones have been associated with royal blood and were elegantly
worn crowns and jewellery, embedded in thrones, laid in swords and used as decorations in
other treasures. Mayan and American Indians have used crystals for diagnosis as well as for
treatment of diseases.

Different cultures and peoples have utilized the power within crystals and stones for as long as
humans have inhabited the Earth. They have been used in a myriad of ways and purposes. Today
with the rapid advancements in technology, crystals are being used to transmit and magnify
energies in many different ways. Ruby crystals, both naturally formed and man-made, are being
used in lasers for microscopic surgery.

Quartz crystals are used in ultrasound devices, in watches, and as memory chips in computers.
Quartz is used as oscillators for controlling radio frequencies in electronic equipment; as
capacitors to modify energy capacity in circuits, as transducers to transmit energy from one
system to another and as condensers that will store energy.

On a more esoteric level, stones and crystals can be used in meditation to develop the
intuition and learn from the higher senses. Crystals and stones can be placed under a
pillow at night during sleep to inspire dreams. They can be used in healing practices to
stabilize erratic emotions, soothe troubled minds and help heal body imbalances. If you ‘re
asking yourself how crystals could do this, and thinking that healing with crystals sounds a
bit far fetched, then consider how crystals are being used in our currant technology to magnify
and transmit electrical currants, and then consider how our bodies cells and our brains transmit
small electrical currants constantly as part of everyday function.

The power and potential of crystals is now being recognised and remembered. In an age coloured

by a rapid development in technology, an escalating, stressful and fast-paced approach to life,
and the emergence of new diseases, some like cancer on an epidemic scale, the energetic and
healing properties of crystals is perhaps needed more than ever. Many of us are finding that
having a relationship with crystals and stones has a beneficial influence on our lives. They are
being carried in pockets to help balance us, and they are being placed in homes and offices to
improve and enhance our living environment. There are no rules when choosing crystals, but
it’s worth bearing in mind that in as much as we may be choosing them, they maybe choosing us.
Most often we don’t consciously realise what we most need, so it’s best to let the subconscious
draw you to the best stone or crystal needed at a particular time. If you are interested in
journeying with a crystal always choose the one that you feel drawn to, or the one that you feel
attracted to the most. Choose with your heart. Often it will be one of the first ones you found
yourself looking at.
