In Feng Shui - What is Chi

Chi is an invisible life force or energy that flows through all things. Feng Shui is about manipulating and balancing the flow of Chi so it moves freely. This will make the atmosphere bright, fully charged and uplifting.

The Chi that flows through the home needs to have a strong movement in order to have a positive and beneficial impact on all the occupants. This energy enters the door then circulates through the rooms in a spiralling movement before finding an exit through a door or window.

Clutter is the biggest obstacle to a smooth flow of Chi, because it creates a blockage that prevents it from manoeuvring. When this occurs in the porch or hallway, these areas are considered to be the mouth of the home, it prevents sufficient Chi from entering. If there is mess everywhere, Chi will circulate sluggishly around. This stagnation will, in turn, affect the occupants, making them feel confused, sick or stuck in a rut.

On the other hand if the energy within the home moves too fast this can make you feel under pressure and you are therefore likely to act impetuously and perhaps react in a dangerous way.

The cures suggested can be used to strengthen or redirect the energy flowing through your home or to slow it down if necessary. Many of the cures will also help to absorb threatening elements. If you have a minor problem it may be rectified with a very simple cure like hanging a “Bagua Mirror” in your hall or by placing a healthy plant within the area.

Bagua Mirrors are the most powerful protective cures available. They comprise a small round mirror set within an octagonal frame inscribed with I Ching symbols. These are usually coloured in an auspicious combination of red, gold and green. The mirror draws the negative energy towards it and the octagonal shape and the runes decorating the frame transform any negatiive energy so that it is no longer harmful.

Remember when choosing mirrors, they should be of good quality and clean, the frames may be of an antique design, but stay well clear of tarnished or tinted mirrors, as they will bring in tarnished energy. For example if a mirror was to be hung in the wealth area you may be bringing in corrupt finances and in the relationship area you may be inviting tainted relationships. It is also important to use mirrors that are either framed or bevelled, otherwise their sharp edges will send out negative energy.

When hanging a mirror, a rule to remember is that what you reflect in the mirror you draw into your home. So if you are reflecting a busy road, you will be drawing a lot of fast-moving energy which can create instability. On the other hand if you are reflecting a beautiful tree in full bloom you will be adding a delicate soft energy into the house.

A long-standing tradition for healers is to use crystals and semi-precious stones like amethyst or rose quartz to strengthen the power of their medicine. Few people are wealthy enough to use diamonds as a Feng Shui cure, but a practical solution is to use the best quality crystal you can afford. This may be in the form of a hanging crystal, chandelier or simply an ornament in any shape or size.

Crystals are used to refresh and bring light into an area and by hanging crystals you have the ability to change the flow of energy. They can also prevent stagnation within an area by sending out myriad prisms that dapple the room and fill it with the moving energy of the sun. Use hanging crystals that are clear, faceted and spherical. If you have the opportunity to raise your head to look at a chandelier, this movement of looking up will lift your energy. When depressed we usually slump our shoulders and take shallow breaths. If we sit straight and breathe deeply, it is much more difficult to stay depressed. In the same way, anything that makes you physically look upwards will make you much more inclined to be happy and of a cheerful spirit.

Windchimes are used to control Chi. The waves of sound vibrate in the air and disturb the energy flowing through the rooms. Hang a windchime in the appropriate area and this can help to cleanse the atmosphere and restore a balance. Importantly sound needs to be used with consideration, so if you are hanging a windchime in the garden, it may be giving you a great deal of pleasure, but if the same windchime is disturbing your neighbours so much that they cannot sleep, you may end up with them sending negative thoughts as they dream of doing despicable things to your chime. This will be very bad for you and for them.

In the home a windchime hung so that it tinkles when a door opens or closes helps to remind you that you are moving from one area into another. In the same way a bead curtain, which makes a much softer noise can be hung to form a barrier between rooms. This will slow down the flow of chi but you will also be aware should someone enter the room.
